More from that great Time-Life series, The Giants of Jazz, with such fascinating information about each of the 28 early jazz giants. This episode features Bix Beiderbecke, Art Tatum, Benny Goodman, Billie Holiday, Coleman Hawkins, and—surprisingly—the unorthodox clarinet of Frank Teschemaker. I also explore the mystery as to why Teschemacher was included as one of the 27 jazz ‘giants’, especially when Artie Shaw stated that he wasn’t very good and had no influence on the development of jazz.
In addition I play Clark Terry performing a Bix Beiderbecke composition. And I add one Canadian who isn’t part of the series, but would have been if they had considered some more contemporary giants. That’s Oscar Peterson—who as well as being an amazing pianist, was a fine singer.
